Madonna Too Old for H&M Ads?
Some people think H&M blew it by hiring Madonna as the company’s ad model because she’s too old to appeal to
She was recently named as the face of High Street giant H&M. But there were murmurs that at 47 years old, Madonna might just be a tad too old to appeal to a target audience of much younger women. Some of the criticism has come from the advertising industry. Ad guru Jerry Della Femina recently commented: “These kids trade in stars every two or three years, and many don’t know Madonna.”
But Madge’s spokeswoman, Liz Rosenberg, certainly had something to say about that. She told PageSix.com: “I defy any 18-year-old to do a quarter of what Madonna does on stage. I hope Jerry Della Femina takes a nice pill.”
Madonna is in great shape, to be sure, but that really doesn’t have anything to do with Femina’s point. Either Madonna can sell things to H&M’s target audience, or she can’t. Whether she can dance a really long time is rather besides the point.
Certainly, the models on H&M’s site are much younger. It appears that the clothes they’re selling are aimed at the decidely-under-47 set. Whether Madonna has any appeal to this demographic, I couldn’t tell you.
