Fall TV Preview: ‘Pushing Daisies’

Another series premiere tonight – this time it’s “Pushing Daisies” on ABC. The premise reads:
“A man with the ability to bring the dead back to life uses his power to solve murder cases and to reconnect with his deceased childhood sweetheart.”
So it sounds a little iffy, but there’s all kinds of buzz about the show, and ABC thinks this will be its next big hit. I’ll give it a chance. The New York Times says,
“The series’s saucy tone and bizarre conceit may prove hard to sustain, but the pace is quick, the dialogue is clever, and the casting is perfect.
As the hero, Mr. Pace is endearing but not too cute. Ms. Kurtz is remarkable in every role, including this one. And Ms. Friel, an English actress, is genuinely winning: pretty in a less generic way than most television ingénues, she looks a little like the young Samantha Eggar and has an easy, playful manner.”

I saw the premiere and my honest opinion is, I get what the writers were aiming for, you know…eccentric, corky, and romantic, but in a sense, all of that imposed it’s self on me to the point that it seemed as if the producers were trying too hard. Although, the show was trying to come off as different, for that very fact it was kind of predictable in a way. The mix of irreverantly morbid humor and romantic moments gave me the impression Daisies was an attempt to mimic a Tim Burton movie. I don’t think I’ll watch it again.
