Wild, Wacky, & True: Baby Born With 12 Fingers & 12 Toes

Little Kamani Hubbard was born just a little over two weeks ago with a little something extra – an extra finger and an extra toe on each hand and foot.

Doctors along with his mother, didn’t notice right away that he had the the extra appendages, but his father took notice quickly.

His father, Kris Hubbard, said, “Some family members have had six fingers, not completely developed. But not the toes.”

Kamani was born with a rare case of polydactyly, meaning extra digits, and the family still isn’t sure whether or not to have them removed.

Doctors say that genetic traits such as these can be hereditary, but having the extra digits that are functional, is extremely rare.

Dr. Michael Treece, a Pediatrician at St. Luke’s, says, “It’s merely an interesting and beautiful variation than a worrisome thing. I would be tempted to leave those fingers in place. I realize children would tease each other over the slightest things, and having extra digits on each hand is more than a slight. But imagine what sort of a pianist a 12-fingered person would be, imagine what sort of a flamenco guitarist, if nothing else think of their typing skills.”

Imagine how much this kid is going to get picked on until he learns piano or the guitar, though. Would you put your child through that unnecessarily? Or would you leave the fingers anyways?
