Britney Spears Continues Single-Handed Effort to Undermine Institution of Marriage

Let the weeping of a nation commence: the K-Fed and Britney marriage is no more:

Britney Spears filed for divorced Tuesday from Kevin Federline, officials said. The Los Angeles County Superior Court filing cites “irreconcible differences,” said court spokeswoman Kathy Roberts.

Spears, 24, married rapper Kevin Federline, 28, in 2004. They have a 1-year-old son, Sean Preston, and an infant son who was born Sept. 12. The couple have not confirmed the infant’s name, which is reportedly Jayden James.

Of course, part of me just suspects it’s a ploy to get more PR for K-Fed’s new album, in case Mr. Spears’ repeated appearances on WWE programming with fellow mediocre white rapper/box office flopper John Cena aren’t doing the trick of attracting the Vanilla Ice demographic.

Funny that Ms. Spears didn’t mention this on her visit by Dave’s couch last night.

Neil Patrick Harris: I am Gay

How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris has told People magazine that he is gay. So much for his spokesman’s denial, which is explained by this rather bizarre passage:

The revelation came shortly after a publicist for Harris, Craig Schneider, had issued a statement following a Canadian Internet report that he had gotten his “longtime sweetheart” David Burtka, a role on his show.

Schneider said in the statement that Harris was “not of that persuasion,” but clarified that to say that the “persuasion” he was referring to was Canadian.

Crushing Madonna’s Dissent… in Europe

Madonna is causing a bit of a stir in Europe with her latest concert stunt–appearing in a mock crucifiction as part of her concert tour–leading German officials to consider pressing charges against the pop star:

German prosecutors are threatening to monitor Madonna’s weekend concert in Duesseldorf to see if she repeats her mock crucifixion scene.

The crucifixion scene, which drew fire from religious leaders in Rome earlier this month, features the pop star wearing a crown of fake thorns and performing on a mirrored cross.

Johannes Mocken, a spokesman for prosecutors in Duesseldorf, said Tuesday that authorities would be watching her concert on Sunday to see if legal action is warranted.

Hopefully the German authorities have clear rules to go by to determine this… or, perhaps not:

The crucifixion scene could be construed as insulting religious beliefs, he said, but he admitted it might also be permitted under laws protecting artistic freedom.

You’ve got to love “balancing” theories of rights.

American audiences won’t be missing out on the scene regardless (assuming, of course, Madonna avoids jail in the meantime): NBC has decided to air it as part of a concert during November sweeps.

Denise Richards, Charlie Sheen Divorce Off the Skids

The Charlie Sheen-Denise Richards era is nearly over after the biggest roadblocks to one of Hollywood’s more bitter marital breakups were resolved Monday:

Estranged Hollywood couple Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards, whose bitter divorce battle titillated the tabloids for months, have amicably settled most of their differences, their lawyers said.

Lance Spiegel, an attorney for Sheen, said on Monday that issues connected with their divorce proceedings were resolved after a closed-door session between lawyers for both sides and Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Marjorie Steinberg, who has presided over the case.

Richards’ lawyer, Neil Hersh, also said the couple had reached an amicable resolution, adding that a September 12 court hearing on child custody had been canceled, but so far no judgment has been entered in the divorce.

As part of the settlement, Richards agreed to drop a restraining order she had obtained against Sheen directing him to stay at least 300 yards away from her and their two daughters, Sam 2, and 1-year-old Lola, the lawyers said. …

The restraining order was issued in April after Richards, 35, filed a declaration claiming Sheen, 40, was abusing prescription drugs, gambling compulsively and had been physically and verbally abusive.

She also claimed that Sheen, who stars as a Malibu playboy on the bawdy CBS television comedy “Two and a Half Men,” hired prostitutes and looked at child pornography on the Internet.

‘Talladega Nights’ Continues Box Office Reign

Despite competition from expected teen draws Step Up and Pulse (the latter featuring Veronica Mars star Kristen Bell), Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby, the Will Ferrell stock-car racing comedy, continued to hold the lead at the box office this weekend, grossing another $23 million.

Elsewhere in the top 5, Oliver Stone’s decidedly non-conspiratorial World Trade Center finished a somewhat disappointing third in its first weekend in theaters after a Wednesday opening, while Barnyard finished in fourth place.
