The Weekend Box Office Results 4/05/09

The first weekend in April was swept away by “Fast and Furious“. Where the heck did that come from?!?

Making a clean sweep in the number one spot with a cool $72,508,000 take home in the charts, “Fast and Furious” blew the competition away.

The movie stars Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto, Paul Walker as Brian O’Conner, Jordana Brewster as Mia Toretto, and Michelle Rodriguez as Letty.

Coming in second place this weekend was last week’s top dog, “Monsters Vs. Aliens“, with $33,510,000. Third place in the chart belonged to “The Haunting In Connecticut” with a nice $9,550,000.

Fourth place was held by “Knowing“, which happens to be the creepiest movie I’ve ever seen. It took home $8,130,000. Rounding off fifth place was “I Love You, Man“, with $7,850,000.

Here’s the “Fast and Furious” trailer:

Wow. Who knew that this movie would be on top? I seriously thought it would be a dud and “Knowing” might creep into the top slot.

According to IMDB, the movie centers around Brian O’Conner as he teams up with Dominic Toretto, after being released from prison. The two of them work with the feds to bring down a heroin importer by infiltrating his operation. All that and fast cars, too?

The Weekend Box Office Results 3/29/09

Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen, and Hugh Laurie really took home the box office gold this weekend with their new cartoon movie, “Monsters Vs. Aliens“. The movie brought in a whopping $58,200,000 in it’s first week on the charts.

Rainn Wilson stars as the voice of Gallaxhar, an alien who lands on Earth and wants to take it over. The military decides to send in the monsters to take him out.

The movie has an all-star cast: Will Arnett as The Missing Link, Kiefer Sutherland as General W.R. Monger, Reese Witherspoon as Susan Murphy/Ginormica, Hugh Laurie as Dr. Cockroach, Seth Rogen as B.O.B., Paul Rudd as Derek Dietl, Stephen Colbert as President Hathaway, Amy Poehler as the voice of the computer, Renee Zellweger as Katie, and John Krasinski as Cuthbert.

Rounding out the top five box office contenders this weekend were “The Haunting In Connecticut” in the second spot with $23,010,000, “Knowing” in third place with $14,705,000, “I Love You, Man” taking fourth place with $12,600,000, and finally, “Duplicity” bringing in $7,556,000.

Here’s the trailer for Monsters Vs. Aliens:

It looks like a really cute and fun family movie. Definitely a must see!

The Weekend Box Office Results 3/22/09

Nicolas Cage’s new movie, “Knowing” really took off this weekend with the box office gold at a $24,814,000 take this weekend. While it’s not the best showing, it knocked “Race To Witch Mountain” out of the top spot.

Coming in second place was the movie that I thought would take the top rankings in the charts, “I Love You, Man“. The Paul Rudd/Jason Segel comedy, brought in $18,005,000 in the second spot.

Taking third place this weekend was Julia Roberts’ and Clive Owen’sDuplicity” with $14,402,000 in ticket sales. In fourth place on the charts was “Race To Witch Mountain“, which brought in $13,004,000 in it’s second week. “Watchmen” brought in $6,725,000 in it’s third week.

Check out the “Knowing” trailer:

The movie is about a professor who stumbles on terrifying predictions about the future from a time capsule that’s been in the ground for fifty years, and sets out to prevent the events from happening.

The Weekend Box Office Results 3/15/09

Race To Witch Mountain” captured the box office this weekend and came out ahead of last week’s top movie, “Watchmen“.

The movie raked in a total of $25,000,000 this past weekend, which isn’t the best take for an entire weekend’s worth of box office sales, but it’s good, considering the competition.

Watchmen” grabbed second place with a total of $18,070,000. Nabbing the third spot on the weekend chart was “The Last House On The Left (2009)” with $14,658,000.

Coming in fourth place was “Taken” with $6,650,000 in its seventh week in theaters. Bringing up fifth place was “Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes To Jail“, which I thought would’ve fell of the radar completely by now.

Check out the trailer:

Aww look at Corey Feldman at the premiere, trying to stay relevant.

Via IMDB, here is their short synopsis of the flick:

A UFO expert enlists the help of a cabbie to protect two siblings with paranormal powers from the clutches of an organization that wants to use the kids for their nefarious plans.

Watchmen” really nailed the box office this weekend, knocking “Madea Goes To Jail” back in the clink.

Ending Madea’s two weekend long reign, “Watchmen” brought in a cool $55,655,000, leaving nothing but crumbs for the rest of the movies out.

Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes To Jail” brought in $8,800,000 leaving a huge gap between first and second place in the box office. In third place was “Taken” with $7,450,000. Fourth place belonged to “Slumdog Millionaire“, which is in it’s 17th week on the charts, with $6,925,000. In fifth place is “Paul Blart: Mall Cop“, which brought in $4,200,000.

Via IMDB, here is their synopsis of the movie:

“Watchmen” is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the “Doomsday Clock” – which charts the USA’s tension with the Soviet Union – is permanently set at five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion – a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers – Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity… but who is watching the Watchmen?”

I don’t know much about superhero movies, but I’d watch this for Jeffrey Dean Morgan. He’s hot.

Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes To Jail” is still sizzling at the top of the box office for the weekend of February 27th until March 1st. Staying at the top with a cool $16,500,000, with “Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience” hot on it’s heels at number two with $12,700,000.

Nabbing third place on the chart was “Slumdog Millionaire“, which is in it’s 16th week on the box office charts. Coming in at fourth place was “Taken“, starring Liam Neeson, which pulled in $9,950,000 in it’s fifth week on the charts. Rounding out the top five is “He’s Just Not That Into You“, which I’ll be running out to see very soon.

Please read our post last week for a synopsis of “Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes To Jail“.

Here’s the trailer for “Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience“:

Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes To Jail” arrested the top spot at the weekend box office and nailed last week’s winner, “Friday The 13th” down to the sixth spot.

Tyler Perry has really outdone himself this time, taking the top spot with a nice $41,120,000. In the second spot was “Taken” which is in it’s fourth week on the chart, taking in $11,400,000. The number three spot was held by “Coraline“, with a $11,031,000 haul. Fourth place in the weekend chart was “He’s Just Not That Into You“, having taken in a cool $8,540,000. The Weekend Box Office Results 2/15/09

Friday The 13th” slashed it’s way to the number one spot this weekend, murdering “He’s Just Not That Into You” for the coveted top spot at the box office.

Friday The 13th” brought in a pretty nice weekend take with $42,245,000. That left chick flick “He’s Just Not That Into You” with second place at $19,610,000. “Taken” took third place with a nice $19,250,00. Newcomer “Confessions Of A Shopaholic” brought in $15,406,000 it’s first week at fourth place. Bringing in the tail end of the top five movies of this past weekend was “Coraline” with a $15,323,000 take.

The horror remake stars Jared Padalecki as Clay Miller, a man who is searching for his sister, Whitney. His only lead was that she was heading towards Crystal Lake. Even though the police and all of the locals have warned him against going any further, he shuns their advice in order to save his sister.

Then…the obvious happens.

He’s Just Not That Into You” was the leader in this week’s box office ratings, despite the critics’ suggestions that the movie wouldn’t be worth watching.

The chick flick with an all-star cast outshined last week’s number one movie, “Taken” by a cool $7 million.

The movie centers around a group of women in their twenties and thirties, who are looking for true love. If the movie stays true to the book, if he’s not calling you, then the guy you’re dating is just not that into you.

I can see where it’s box office success comes from. I still want to see this movie, it’s a whole new take on dating for single women, besides “Sex and The City“, which we’re basically spoonfed. (I love it, too, though.)

The movie stars Jennifer Aniston, Ben Affleck, Ginnifer Goodwin, Kevin Connolly, Bradley Cooper, Scarlett Johansson, Justin Long, among others. One half of the writing team that wrote the book, Greg Behrendt, also has a cameo in the movie, as a priest.

The Weekend Box Office Results 2/1/09

Taken” has overtaken the box office crown and swiped the weekend sales away from “Paul Blart: Mall Cop“.

Taken” drew in $24,65,000 in this weekend’s box office, leaving the second spot for Paul Blart. Also new in the theaters is “The Uninvited“, which took third place in it’s first week. “Hotel For Dogs” is in it’s third week and landed the fourth spot, leaving the fifth spot for Clint Eastwood’s flick, “Gran Torino“.

Taken” stars Liam Neeson as Bryan, an ex-CIA spy and father of kidnapping victim, Kim. Kim and her friend Amanda take a trip to Europe where Amanda gets kidnapped, and subsequently, so does Kim. Amanda dies from a heroin overdose and Kim gets sold into sex slavery.

Bryan tells the kidnappers that if they let his daughter go, he won’t track them down and kill them. Things apparently don’t go as planned, and you can see where this is going.

The Weekend Box Office Results – 1/25/09

Paul Blart: Mall Cop” is in the lead again for this weekend’s box office results. If you thought that last week’s box office topple was amazing, then the second time around leaves us in utter shock.

After “Paul Blart: Mall Cop“, came Rhona Mitra and Kate Beckinsale’s new movie, “Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans“.

Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans” is the prequel story behind the Underworld franchise. The new movie details the feud between the aristocratic vampires and their one-time slaves, the Lycans.

In the Dark Ages, a Lycan named Lucian rose up as the leader of the werewolves who rallied against Viktor, the king of the vampires who enslaved them.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop” is surprisingly in the lead for this weekend’s box office results. I’m very surprised that people came out in droves to see Kevin James’ latest flick.

The funny movie took over the box office and knocked out Clint Eastwood’s movie, “Gran Torino” from the top slot.

Paul Blart works as a security guard at a New Jersey mall and has applied for years to become a cop, but was denied due to his weight. One day, a gang of organized criminals take hostages in the mall and he becomes the eyes and ears of the police force, inside the mall.

So he basically has to pull a “Die Hard” and take out the criminals on his own.

The Weekend Box Office Results – 1/11/09

Clint Eastwood’s rumored last movie, “Gran Torino” has taken charge of the box office this past weekend with $29,025,000 in profits.

The movie has taken down the two-week strong hold that “Marley & Me” had over the holidays and has a nice steady lead over “Bride Wars” and “The Unborn (2009)“.

Gran Torino” stars Clint Eastwood as Walt Kowalski, a Korean War veteran, a widower, and an anti-hero. He takes on the neighborhood gangs, but shuns being called a hero. He’s a gun-toting racist with thoughtless children who want to put him a nursing home on his birthday. My favorite part of the trailer is him yelling at the thugs to “get off of my lawn.”

Here’s the recap of the weekend box office chart:

This looks like a really good movie and people came out in droves to see it. I’m going to put this on my list of must-see movies.

The Weekend Box Office Results – 1/04/09

Welcome to 2009! The new year hasn’t really seen much change with the box office results from last week, but needless to say, “Marley & Me” has taken the crown again.

For the second weekend in a row, Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson, along with that adorable dog, are bringing in the payola. Have you seen it yet? See the trailer here.

The box office this weekend pretty much shows us that there were no newer movies put out to give “Marley & Me” any competition. With nothing out to rival the top five, it’s no wonder that absolutely nothing changed.

Bedtime Stories” again took second place with an $8 million drop from last weekend. This is also a movie that I plan on seeing. I love all things Adam Sandler, so this is not a “wait for the DVD” movie.

At third place again, is Brad Pitt’s movie, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button“. I started watching this movie and got half-way through. Admittedly, it’s not because it was bad or anything, it was just late. It’s a long movie, but I did like what parts I saw.

Fourth in the lineup, surprisingly, is Tom Cruise’s Nazi flick, “Valkyrie“. Tom’s dedicated promotion of the movie brought out the fans, to the tune of $14 million and change.

Yes Man” rounds out the list of the top five for this past weekend. This is another movie that I’m going to see before it leaves the theaters.

The Weekend Box Office Results – 12/28/08

Jennifer Aniston took the weekend box office crown with her and Owen Wilson’s dog movie, Marley & Me.

Despite having the ending to the movie ruined by vandals, people still came out in droves to watch the doggie mayhem.

The flick stepped all over ex-husband Brad Pitt’s movie, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” this weekend, by ten million. Of the rivalry between the two movies to be released on the same day, Jennifer said to Oprah, “We all want our movie to do well…Can we have a tie?”

And who else, besides me, is surprised 100% by the fact that “Valkyrie” didn’t totally bomb? I mean, people watched a Hitler assassination’s attempt on Christmas? Seems like they’d go together like oil and water.
