When most people think of comedians they usually just think of the men and most movies or comedy tours are full of male comedians, to celebrate some of the female comedians Yahoo have come up with a list of the top female comedians. Take a look at the top 10:
10. Lucille Ball
“How I Love Lucy was born? We decided that instead of divorce lawyers profiting from our mistakes, we’d profit from them.”
Probably the single most influential woman figure in comedy, Ball’s long-running sitcom I Love Lucy not only forged the path for women on TV, but continues to run in syndication, holding its own against contempory television comedies that she and it undoubtedly influenced.
09. Jenny McCarthy
“My philosophy of dating is to just fart right away.”
The original naughty hottie, McCarthy started on the MTV dating show, Singled Out. Her crassness, crudeness, and tomboyish tongue often stole the spotlight and not only opened doors for her career, but also for foul-mouthed female followers like Chelsea Handler.
08. Tracey Ullman
“If God had intended for breasts to be seen, He wouldn’t have created large woolen pullovers.”
Regarded as the queen of sketch comedy, Ullman’s side-splitting sendups of famous men and women alike made The Tracey Ullman Show a hit in the 90′s and beyond. It also introduced the world to an animated family of five named The Simpsons.
07. Joan Rivers

The queen of the red carpet and savage wit. If women in comedy was a political office, Rivers would be the two-term president who won by a landslide. Respected by peers and audiences alike, Rivers’ witty tongue-lashings take aim at everything and everyone, including herself.
06. Roseanne Barr
“Women should try to increase their size rather than decrease it, because I believe the bigger we are, the more space we’ll take up, and the more we’ll have to be reckoned with.”
Barr’s success came at a time when audiences wanted it: an overweight, homely, mom-type who hid a hilarious sense of humor under her juice-stained sweats. Barr was lauded and loved for her true-to-life portrayal of supermoms everywhere, but also castigated for setting Tom Arnold loose on the world.
05. Ellen Degeneres
“My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was sixty. She’s ninety-seven now, and we don’t know where the hell she is.”
Years ago, Degeneres turned her sitcom Ellen’s demise and media-fed questions about her sexuality into her current success as TV’s first openly-gay comedy/variety talk-show host. Her throne atop daytime television remains unchallenged, and her Queen of Nice title does nothing to tarnish her hilarity.
04. Carol Burnett
“We didn’t exactly starve, but we were pretty poor when I was growing up. I remember thinking, Oh gosh, if I could just make thirty dollars a month to help with the rent, that would be fabulous. So perhaps I envied performers when I heard that Bing Crosby made twenty dollars a minute.”
Along with Lucille Ball, Phyllis Diller, and Lily Tomlin, Carol Burnett is widely considered one of the fore-mothers of female comedy. The Carol Burnett Show, a long-running sketch comedy hour, sealed her fate as an American icon for women in comedy.
03. Amy Poehler
“I’ve said this before, that, when you’re in school and you’re the class clown, men are really good at making fun at other people and women are really good at making fun of themselves.”
Any fan of Late Night with Conan O’Brien will tell you some of the funniest moments on the show were when sidekick Andy Richter’s angry, hyperactive “kid sister” interrupted the show with her emotional outbursts. Poehler later went on to steal scenes on Saturday Night Live, host Weekend Update, and star in her own sitcom, NBC’s Parks and Rec.
02. Phyllis Diller

To say that Phyllis Diller paved the way for zany, female comics would be like saying Michael Jordan was a pretty good basketball player. Diller’s original zaniness, wit, and personality were unlike any seen before, and her scratchy-voiced delivery of some of the most deadpan statements places her among the top originals of funny women.

“Weird,” “strange,” and “offbeat” are words used to describe Sedaris and her sense of humor, but only in conjuction with “funny.” Sedaris’ books, stints on TV, and talk show appearances have only confirmed these descriptions, but it is this uniqueness along with her sense of humor that makes her so original and funny.
I would not put Jenny McCarthy on this list instead I would add Kathy Griffin and Lisa Kudrow to the list, who is your top female comedians at the moment?

Sometimes in Hollywood a script calls for actresses to tone down their makeup or gain a bit of weight, which leads us to this list. Now I don’t think any of these actresses are that ugly in the roles they play, some of them are just wearing barely any makeup but some of them do look a bit like death.
20. Katherine Heigl
Katherine toned down her stunning looks to play the plain Jane in ’27 Dresses.’ Are we really supposed to believe that a dishwater-blond dye job is supposed to make Hiegl “ugly”?
19. Drew Barrymore
Drew played the dorky Josie Geller in ‘Never Been Kissed’ but ugly clothes, no make-up and a dorky hairdo couldn’t hide the fact she was a stunning woman.
18. Linda Cardellini
Linda is stunning but she often plays homely characters. She tried her best to convince us that she was an ugly nerd as Velma in 2002′s ‘Scooby-Doo.’ Unfortunately for Linda, we can see past those hideous wedges and wig to know she is actually gorgeous in real life.
17. Christina Ricci
Christina is so cute that the only way to make her homely is to stick on a disgusting pig nose onto her face. Ricci played the unfortunately-nosed title character of the film ‘Penelope.’
16. America Ferrera
Perhaps the most common example of a pretty actress who plays ugly is America in her role as Betty in ‘Ugly Betty.’ Again, dowdy clothes and nerdy accessories are brought in to turn the stunning America into a (sort of believable) nerd, but we all know that America is gorgeous in real life.
15. Cameron Diaz
Cameron played the homely Lotte in ‘Being John Malkovich’ with the aid of a frizzy wig and brown eye contacts. Because we all know how brown eyes/curly hair equals homely!
14. Anne Hathaway
If there is ever a “makeover” scene in a film you can guarantee that the pre-makeover character will be wearing glasses and ugly clothes. So it is no surprise that Anne had to get ugly for her breakout role in ‘The Princess Diaries.’
13. Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett is lusted after by almost every man in America but men weren’t exactly clamoring for her attention in her breakout role as am awkward, snarky teenager in ‘Ghost World.’
12. Tina Fey
Every Thursday Tina tries to convince us that she is the unattractive Liz Lemon on NBC’s ’30 Rock.’ Sure, trying to pass off Fey as ugly is pretty unbelievable but the show is funny enough for us to ignore this ridiculous element.
11. Michelle Williams
Michelle typically plays “pretty girl” roles but in the indie film ‘Wendy and Lucy’ she tried her best to look homely. We guess all it takes to look ugly is to have an unfortunate short haircut and an unflattering pair of jorts.
10. Nicole Kidman
Nicole popped on a fake nose to get “ugly” to play Virginia Woolf in ‘The Hours.’ Despite how the film portrayed her, Woolf was actually a celebrated beauty during her time. But “pretty” doesn’t translate to “Oscar” for Hollywood actresses.
9. Chloe Sevigny
Chloe is known for her good looks and fashionable taste off-camera but she dialed up the dowdiness for Nikki Grant in HBO’s ‘Big Love.’ It is hard to make a pompadour and a French braid look cute, but Chloe somehow finds a way to make it work.
8. Jenna Fisher
Jenna scrunched her hair with a full can of mousse to make us believe she was the plain Pam in NBC’s ‘The Office.’ That hairstyle and boring office clothing could make even the most gorgeous woman look plain.
7. Elisabeth Moss
Pretty Elisabeth got the world’s worst bangs to play the unattractive but ambitious Peggy Olson in AMC’s ‘Mad Men.’ Again, Hollywood’s answer to make pretty actresses unattractive is a horrible haircut.
6. Kaitlin Olson
Kaitlin tries her best to come off as unattractive as Dee Reynolds in ‘It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’ but we can all tell she is stunning when not dressed up to look like a white trash slob. Why are so many leading women in comedy shows forced to play ugly?
5. Hilary Swank
Hilary is a stunning woman but she made us believe she was a dowdy transgendered man for her Oscar-winning role in ‘Boys Don’t Cry.’
4. Mariah Carey
Mariah shocked the world when she stripped off her diva glamor and played a plain-looking social worker in ‘Precious.’
3. Felicity Huffman
One of Hollywood’s favorite way to ugly-up actresses is to make them play a transgendered person. Felicity played male-to-female transsexual Bree for 2005′s ‘Transamerica.’
2. Charlize Theron
Charlize surprised audiences everywhere when she portrayed a homeless, murdering hooker in 2003′s ‘Monster,’ which earned her an Oscar. Looking at the picture of the two, it is still hard to believe that they are even the same person.
1. Amy Sedaris
Perhaps one of the greatest examples of “getting ugly for a role” is Amy playing Jerri Blank in the brilliant TV show (and later, movie) ‘Strangers With Candy.’ Sedaris played up Jerri’s ugliness so much that it almost became an art form.

They trip, they choke, they make us roll our eyes and shake our heads. Sometimes, they even get the girl (or guy). They are the kids you made fun of in high school — or they’re you in high school. No need to say which.
Woody Allen
Although he played the romantic lead in many of his own movies (especially the early ones), Woody Allen is a nerd extraordinaire. In Play It Again, Sam, he makes a killer first impression on his date by dropping her coat on the floor and then swinging it into some breakables. The agonizing discomfort he goes through in Bananas while trying to buy a nude magazine might literally make you itch. With his thick glasses, unkempt hair, and nervous stammer, Allen remains the gold standard of nerds.
Anthony Michael Hall
Sometimes a director finds a go-to nerd and sticks with him, which is what happened when John Hughes found Anthony Michael Hall. Hall managed a triple dose of teenage awkwardness in Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Weird Science. Whether dancing in a “very hot” manner for Molly Ringwald or recounting his tragic inability to make a lamp that works, Hall is, by turns, cringe-worthy and sympathetic. Getting his pants pulled down by Robert Downey Jr. elevates him to classic status.
Ben Stiller
Ben Stiller perfectly illustrates the nerd necessities. First, an obliviousness to looking and acting stupid. See: Zoolander (pursed lips, odd strut, interchangeable “looks”). Second, incurable klutziness: in There’s Something About Mary, he suffers the ultimate self-inflicted groin injury. Third, a genuine desire to fit in: witness Stiller’s sad attempts to impress — or at least survive — his alarming potential father-in-law in Meet the Parents.
Joan Cusack
Joan Cusack’s character in Sixteen Candles was officially called Geek Girl #1, and her big scene involved banging her headgear against a water fountain as she tried to get a drink. She went on to play a boatload of wacky sidekicks, from the inappropriately loud and brassy (Working Girl) to the frazzled and clumsy (Broadcast News) to the cross-eyed and rather dim (Married to the Mob).
Jerry Lewis
Jerry Lewis elevated nerdiness to an art form, incorporating slapstick, weird costuming, and even weirder voices as he played put-upon working-class heroes in The Disorderly Orderly, The Errand Boy, and The Big Mouth. He could wring laughs and squirms out of a confrontation with a salty bowl of soup (Cinderfella) or an invisible typewriter (Who’s Minding the Store?). Even his smoothies, like Buddy Love, in The Nutty Professor, were dweeby.
Clint Howard
For stellar under-the-radar nerd performances, look no further than the career of Clint Howard, brother of director Ron Howard. He played small but memorable roles in a slew of comedies like the Austin Powers series and Rock ‘n’ Roll High School. He also appeared in B-horror flicks like Carnosaur and The Wraith and some high-profiles (Apollo 13, Cinderella Man, Frost/Nixon).
Rick Moranis
Rick Moranis rose to prominence on Second City Television, then went on to reprise one of his most notable characters — co-host of The Great White North — in The Adventures of Bob and Doug McKenzie: Strange Brew. His nebbish visage graced Club Paradise and Brewster’s Millions, but he really hit his stride with roles in Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and Little Shop of Horrors. Moranis impresses most when contrasted with a more confident screen mate, as when he played opposite Bill Murray, in Ghostbusters.
Curtis Armstrong
Curtis Armstrong is uncool yet defiant as the repulsive Dudley “Booger” Dawson in the Revenge of the Nerds series. In the first film, he won an arm-wrestling match by picking his nose and grossing out his opponent. He followed up by snorting snow, in Better Off Dead, and displaying his extreme delicacy, in One Crazy Summer. Armstrong went on to roles in other loser-friendly movies like Bad Medicine, Van Wilder, and Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.
Amy Sedaris
Her résumé is heavy with television roles, but Amy Sedaris’s cinematic turns as a nerd girl are strong enough to warrant inclusion here. As Jerri Blank, in Strangers With Candy (which she co-wrote), she’s painful to watch: seeing a grown woman struggle to fit in with snobby high-school students is almost as excruciating as watching a teen do it. In Bewitched, she played nosy neighbor Gladys Kravitz, a role originated by Alice Pearce.
Michael Cera
If anyone can make it desirable to be (or date) a nerd, it’s Michael Cera as Paulie Bleeker, the chronically uncomfortable baby daddy of the title character in Juno. In Superbad, McLovin (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) may have out-geeked him point for point, but Cera’s Evan was still the nerd linchpin. He’s showing signs of inching toward romantic hero (Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist).
