Actors Who Passed On Major Movie Roles

A lot of actors who get movie roles weren’t actually the first choices for the role, some original actors pass on the project because they don’t like it or they aren’t getting enough money or sometimes they just can’t schedule it in. Well here is 10 actors who have passed on some of the biggest roles of all time, some of the photos are manips of what they would be like in the role and some are just their normal boring face.

Actors Who Passed On Major Movie Roles 10

Will Smith – Neo, The Matrix

Will Smith passed on the role of Neo as did Ewan McGregor. Will Smith said, “You know, The Matrix is a difficult concept to pitch. In the pitch, I just didn’t see it. I watched Keanu’s performance – and very rarely do I say this – but I would have messed it up. I would have absolutely messed up The Matrix. At that point I wasn’t smart enough as an actor to let the movie be. Whereas Keanu was smart enough to just let it be. Let the movie and the director tell the story, and don’t try and perform every moment.” Will Smith went on to star in I, Robot.

Actors Who Passed On Major Movie Roles 09

W.C. Fields – Wizard, The Wizard of Oz

The part of the Wizard was written for W.C. Fields and it seems that it was perfect role, a traveling con man. He turned down the role for the most famous of reasons…money. He was only offered $75,000 by MGM but he wanted $100,000. Other sources say he turned it down to write You Can’t Cheat an Honest Man. The role went to Frank Morgan.

Actors Who Passed On Major Movie Roles 08

Cary Grant – James Bond

The producers of the James Bond films originally approached Cary Grant about playing the role of Britain’s 007 agent. Cary declined the role because he didn’t want to be tied to a film series. The role went to Sean Connery starting with Dr. No in 1962. Fleming wasn’t entirely happy with the choice. “He’s not exactly what I had in mind,” said Fleming.

Actors Who Passed On Major Movie Roles 07

Bette Davis – Scarlett O’Hara, Gone with the Wind

Bette Davis turned down the role of Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind. The role went to Vivien Leigh. Davis decided to pass on the role when she thought Errol Flynn would by playing the part of Rhett. She had refused to work with him earlier.

Actors Who Passed On Major Movie Roles 06

Sean Connery – Gandalf, Lord of the Ring Trilogy

Amazingly, Sean Connery turned down the role of Gandalf from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy. His reason for passing on the role was due to the length of time for filming – 18 months. Sir Ian McKellan won the role and everyone couldn’t be happier. Mr. Connery said he had never read Tolkein and when he read the script he referred to the hobbits as bobbits.

Actors Who Passed On Major Movie Roles 05

Daryl Hannah – Vivian, Pretty Woman

Daryl Hannah turned down the role of the hooker, Vivian, because she felt it was demeaning to women. Strangely, she later appeared in Dancing at the Blue Iguana in the role of a stripper. Even more unbelievable, Molly Ringwald also passed on the role of Vivian. Vivian’s role was soon nabbed by Julia Roberts.

Actors Who Passed On Major Movie Roles 04

Kevin Costner – Bill, Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Vol. 2

Mr. Costner turned down the role of Bill in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and Kill Bill: Vol. 2. He opted instead to direct Open Range in yet another poor career choice…cough, cough Water World.

Actors Who Passed On Major Movie Roles 03

John Cusack – John Bender, The Breakfast Club

I think John Cusack is one of the finest actors of my generation and I’m very disappointed that he didn’t get to be part of The Breakfast Club. Of course, he was a mainstay in the teenage angst movies of the 80s, so I’m happy. He was originally the actor chosen to play John Bender. Unfortunately he was unable to fit it into his schedule and Judd Nelson ended up in the role.

Actors Who Passed On Major Movie Roles 02

Bruce Willis – Sam Wheat, Ghost

Bruce Willis turned down the role of Sam Wheat in Ghost “because he didn’t think the plot would work and that playing a ghost would be detrimental to his career”. Ironically, he played a ghost in The Sixth Sense and he would have played opposite his now ex-wife, Demi Moore.

Actors Who Passed On Major Movie Roles 01

Al Pacino – Han Solo, Star Wars

Al Pacino, Nick Nolte and Christopher Walken were all considered for the role of Han Solo. Even harder to imagine, supposedly Burt Reynolds turned down the role. Harrison Ford took the part and the rest is box office history.

I can safely say that I am glad none of these actors took on the roles, maybe they would actually be good and I am just used to the ones who actually did the project. But Sean Connery as Gandalf is a big no no for me.

Andrew McCarthy Held at Gunpoint in Ethiopia

While penning a piece for travel magazine AFAR, Andrew McCarthy was detained at gunpoint after entering an Ethiopian church without proper documentation.

Andrew McCarthy Held at Gunpoint in Ethiopia

The actor, who found himself without his paperwork while visiting the historic Lalibela church in Ethiopia’s Amhara Region, was confronted by an armed guard. McCarthy writes,

ghw_quote“His gun [was] pointed at my back. I thought his reaction to my offense was extreme; I tried to say as much. He grunted something in Amharic and prodded me with the tip of his rifle.”

After being escorted from the church, McCarthy was helped to safety by residents of the town.

Despite the alarming incident, the actor maintained his sense of humor, saying it was “just the kind of thing that happens when you show up alone in a distant country without a plan.”

I will always have a soft spot for Andrew, “Pretty in Pink” for the win!

Anthony Michael Hall Stalks And Attacks Ex-Girlfriend

Anthony Michael Hall has landed himself in some very hot water, you see the former member of the 1980′s Brat Pack has been allegedly stalked his ex-girlfriend and attacked her.

Anthony Michael Hall Stalks And Attacks Ex-Girlfriend

Apparently the Breakfast Club actor was served with a temporary restraining order after he allegedly attacked his ex-girlfriend, Diana Falzone, in her New York apartment. The order states that Hall must “refrain from assault, stalking, harassment… menacing, reckless endangerment and intimidation”.

Falzone, who is a radio DJ And relationship expert (yeah I laughed too), claims that Hall attempted to kick her apartment door down last week and when she let him in he banged her head against the wall. A spokesman for Anthony Michael Hall, who suffers from bipolar disorder, said they didn’t know about the restraining order but “all of the allegations are erroneous and will be addressed accordingly.”

Oh and for shits and giggles, the last relationship article that Diana Falzone wrote is titled “How Not To Date a Loser.”

An Amazing Tribute To 80′s Icon John Hughes

John Hughes wrote and directed a lot of the eighties movies responsible for the brat pack that was featured on “The Breakfast Club”, “Pretty In Pink”, and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”, among others.

A young girl at the time, Allison Byrne-Fields had written to Hughes. She wrote to him and received a form letter back from the famous writer/director, welcoming her to become an official member of “The Breakfast Club.” Upset, she wrote him again, and a friendship began.

I was irate.

I wrote back to John, explaining in no uncertain terms that, excuse me, I just poured my f*cking heart out to you and YOU SENT ME A FORM LETTER.

That was just not going to fly.

He wrote back.

“This is not a form letter. The other one was. Sorry. Lots of requests. You know what I mean. I did sign it.”

He wrote back and told me that he was sorry, that he liked my letter and that it meant a great deal to him. He loved knowing that his words and images resonated with me and people my age. He told me he would say hi to everyone on my behalf.

“No, I really will. Judd will be pleased you think he’s sexy. I don’t.”

I asked him if he would be my pen pal.

He said yes.

“I’d be honored to be your pen pal. You must understand at times I won’t be able to get back to you as quickly as I might want to. If you’ll agree to be patient, I’ll be your pen pal.”

From 1985 to 1987, the two were pen pals consistently. Of her letters, Hughes said to her, “I can’t tell you how much I like your comments about my movies. Nor can I tell you how helpful they are to me for future projects. I listen. Not to Hollywood. I listen to you. I make these movies for you. Really. No lie. There’s a difference I think you understand. It’s been a month of boring business stuff. Grown up, adult, big people meetings. Dull but necessary. But a letter from Alison always makes the mail a happening thing.”

John Hughes and his impact on growing up in the eighties with his movies, will be sorely missed. He passed away yesterday, August 6, 2009 of a heart attack.

He will always be remembered as the man who understand teen angst, relationships, and high school.

Here is what others have said about the iconic Hughes:

• “I was a fan of both his work and a fan of him as a person. The world has lost not only a quintessential filmmaker whose influence will be felt for generations, but a great and decent man.” – actor MACAULAY CULKIN

• “John was an amazing mentor to me during the time we were shooting Curly Sue. He had a childlike spirit that connected us instantly and always made me feel loved. He will be missed but his work speaks for itself and will live in his honor.” – actor ALISAN PORTER

• “John Hughes’s iconic films gave a powerful voice to a generation. He will be missed but never forgotten!” – actor DEMI MOORE

• “I will always cherish the time I spent with John Hughes.I was so grateful for the opportunity to walk around in his shoes and try to see the world through through his brilliant eyes. Sharing his films with my kids over the years I can see the timelessness of his work.” actor KEVIN BACON

• “His films helped establish an international notion of ordinary American teenagers, and he was as popular abroad as at home. Once when I was visiting the largest movie theater in Calcutta, I asked if Star Wars had been their most successful American film. No, I was told, it was Baby’s Day Out, a Hughes comedy about a baby wandering through a big city, which played for more than a year.” – critic ROGER EBERT

• “He was a wonderful man, a genius, a poet. I don’t think anyone has come close to him as being the poet of the youth of America in the postwar period. He was to them what Shakespeare was to the Elizabethan Age.” – actor-economist BEN STEIN

• “”I asked John how long it took to write Planes, Trains and Automobiles, he said, ‘I wrote it over the weekend.’ The weekend. That shows you what he was able to do.” – actor-writer STEVE MARTIN

I’ll leave you with this Brat Pack mashup:

R.I.P. John Hughes (1950-2009).
