10 Career-Changing Roles That Never Happened

Imagine “Pretty Woman” starring Molly Ringwald. Or “Raiders of the Lost Ark” with Tom Selleck as leading man. How about “The Graduate” with Robert Redford playing Benjamin Braddock — instead of Dustin Hoffman?

It’s only on the rare occasion that viewers try to imagine a different cast, that’s when they realize the impact of such decisions.

Try to consider the 1980s sitcom “Family Ties” without Michael J. Fox playing uber-Republican Alex P. Keaton. It seems almost impossible now, but the television studio only offered the now-iconic part to Fox after first-choice Matthew Broderick passed on the role.

Making the right casting call is crucial to financial success in entertainment, which is why a casting director (either employed by the studio or working on a freelance basis) as well as a director, producer, and studio executives weigh in on the decisions.

Calista Flockhart Gets Back to Work

Calista Flockhart, the stick-thin actress that was a huge success on Ally McBeal, has returned to TV. The verdict is still out on whether it will be a success this time.

Returning to a full-time job isn’t an easy decision for any mom to make. So when Brothers & Sisters executive producer and director Ken Olin approached her, Calista Flockhart had many, many questions.

She loved the script,” Olin states, “but then she’d go, ‘What is the schedule going to be? And what are the expectations?’”

Olin patiently waited for her to decide – the role was written with her in mind – but was just about ready to begin searching for someone else when Flockhart finally said yes.

She was intrigued by the role: a conservative talk show host at odds with her liberal family. And she could not resist the challenge of playing someone “whose political views are fundamentally different than mine,” she said in July. “That definitely attracted me to the part.” Plus, she told Olin, “I miss acting.” source

Calista Flockhart to Play Conservative Pundit in New TV Series

Calista Flockhart, who stared in “Ally McBeal,” is going to play a conservative pundit in a new show.

ABC reportedly has huge hopes for a new series to air this fall called “Brothers & Sisters,” which will follow the hit “Desperate Housewives” on the schedule. Calista Flockhart, best known as Ally McBeal, plays a conservative radio host turned TV pundit. Others in the high-powered cast include Patricia Wettig, Rachel Griffiths, Ron Rifkin and Sally Field. Flockhart recently explained, “I really want to go back to work. It just seemed like the perfect time and the perfect project.”

Asked to describe the pundit, producer Ken Olin (formerly a star of “Thirty Something’) said, “She’s not Ann Coulter. She’s not insane.”

Heh. That actually answers my question, in that there’s a not insignificant similarity in their appearance.

Kate Hudson Wins Libel Award After Being Called Skinny

Kate Hudson is just the right weight, according to a British court:

Kate Hudson has accepted libel damages from a supermarket tabloid that claimed she was dangerously thin, her lawyer said Thursday. The British edition of the National Enquirer has agreed to pay undisclosed damages and print an apology for an October 2005 article that claimed Hudson was “way too thin” and looked “like skin and bones,” said Simon Smith, a lawyer for the 27-year-old actress.

Now, Hudson looks perfectly healthy to me. But how does one demonstrate that one does not look “like skin and bones” or is not in fact “way too thin”? Aren’t such things matters of opinion rather than fact?

And how injurious, really, is it for a Hollywood actress to be considered skinny? Kate Moss seems to be making a fabulous living at it, as did Twiggy and countless other other supermodels. And Calista Flockhart is marrying Harrison Ford.

This, on the otherhand, is more problematic:

The article — accompanied by a photo of a gaunt-looking Hudson — claimed her mother, Goldie Hawn, planned to confront her about her weight. Both Hudson and Hawn denied the claim. Smith said Hudson lost weight to get in shape for a film after giving birth to her son, Ryder, in January 2004. He said she took legal action over the magazine’s suggestion she had “recklessly and foolishly endangered her health” by failing to eat.

These are, I suppose, matters of fact. But the claim that one’s mother was worried about one’s weight, while perhaps falsifiable, is hardly something one would think would entitle one to damages.

Harrison Ford to Marry Calista Flockhart

Harrison Ford is going to marry Calista Flockhart, an anorexic woman young enough to be his daughter, according to the tabloids.

Photo Harrison Ford to Marry Calista Flockhart Harrison Ford will finally marry long-term girlfriend Calista Flockhart, according to a US report.

It is believed thought the pair - who have been dating for four years - will tie the knot later this year.

According to America’s National Enquirer magazine, Calista - who is 22 years younger than 63-year-old Harrison - is thrilled the pair are finally going to exchange vows.

The magazine also claims the ‘Indiana Jones’ actor has agreed to adopt a baby with Calista, who already has an adopted son, four-year-old Liam.

A source said: “They celebrated their fourth anniversary as lovers recently, and he gifted her with a stunning diamond bracelet from Tiffany’s after a romantic dinner. Yet, as good as their relationship is, Harrison has always been marriage-shy. SOURCE

Frankly, while the age difference is substantial, Ford is a very young 63 owing to his fitness level and age differences matter much less as people get older. A 33-year-old dating an 11-year-old would be criminal and a 44-year-old dating a 21-year-old would be an emotional mismatch; it’s probably no big deal at 53/31, much less 63/41. At that point, both have reached full maturity.

Surely, FemaleFirst could have found a better photo of Ford. He sure doesn’t look happy about his impending marriage!
