Fashion designer Alexander McQueen hanged himself in his closet and left a suicide note, a coroner told a London inquest on Wednesday.
McQueen, 40, was found dead at his London apartment Thursday. The cause of death was asphyxia and hanging, said coroner’s officer Lynda Martindill.
A police officer told the inquest that McQueen’s death was “nonsuspicious,” according to Martindill. “The coroner said a note had been found and is being looked at by the police,” Martindill said, without offering details about the note. The coroner adjourned the inquest until April 28 in order to complete the full post-mortem report, she said.
McQueen, who had dressed stars from Sarah Jessica Parker and Nicole Kidman to Rihanna and Sandra Bullock, killed himself nine days after the death of his mother. He expressed his devastation at her death on his Twitter account days before he died.
McQueen, whose real name was Lee Alexander McQueen, had a reputation for controversy that earned him the titles “enfant terrible” and “the hooligan of English fashion.”
British Vogue Editor Alexandra Shulman called him a “modern-day genius.”
“His brilliant imagination knew no bounds,” she said after his death.
Eccentric singer Lady Gaga, who called herself a big fan and wore McQueen’s alien-inspired stilettos in a recent video, dedicated her performance at Tuesday night’s BRIT Awards in London to the designer.
McQueen was born in 1970 in London’s East End, the son of a taxi driver, according to a biography on the Vogue Web site.

Ryan Jenkins, the man who is accused of killing his wife, was found dead at a motel in Hope, British Columbia, last night.
Ryan who appeared on VH1′s reality show Megan Wants A Millionaire was charged murdering his swimsuit model wife, Jasmine Fiore, on August 20th.
He was found hanging from a belt in a room at the Thunderbird Motel after the manager decided to check on the room rented three days earlier by an unknown woman.
While the woman checked in – a man waited outside in a silver PT Cruiser with Alberta licence plates (Jenkins is from Calgary). The woman stayed in the room for 20 minutes then left and was never seen from again, but on Sunday at 11am when it was time to check out – the manager went to check the hotel room.
Kevin Walker, the manager of the hotel, said that when he seen the man walk past his own room “he didn’t look like the Ryan Jenkins I’d seen on TV. He looked like a man at the end of his rope, not the muscle-bound macho man you saw on TV.â€
He continued, “I thought maybe they left the key in the room and just left, as I was pushing the door open, I smelled death. And then, as I kept opening the door, there was death staring at me, hanging from the coat rack by a belt. After I swung the door open and saw him hanging there — I didn’t notice anything after that.â€
This whole murder scandal kicked off last Tuesday in Buena Park, CA, after police made Jenkins a man of interest in the death of his ex-wife who’s body was found stuffed in a suitcase with her teeth and fingers removed. The only way to identify her was the serial number on her breast implants.
Police have dismissed the murder charges but are now investigating how he crossed the border into Canada.
By the way Jenkins was also going to be on Vh1′s other show I Love Money 3, which he is rumored to have won. But now a statement has been released saying:
“Just in case you missed it, we’re sad to announce that the fate of both Megan Wants a Millionaire and I Love Money 3 have been determined: both have been canceled and will not make it to air.”

British actress Lucy Gordon was found dead in her apartment after she reportedly hung herself. She was 28 years old.
Gordon, who has appeared in ‘Spider-Man 3,’ ‘Serendipity’ and ‘Frost,’ was found dead on Wednesday, and the Daily Telegraph is reporting that she hung herself following a friend’s recent suicide.
“There were no suspicious circumstances. It appears that the young woman took her own life,” a law enforcement officer told the Telegraph.
Another source told Sky News that “it was an horrific scene. The young woman had taken her own life in terrible circumstances. We are not seeking anyone else. It was a clear case of suicide.”
Gordon is set to portray British singer-actress Jane Birkin in ‘Serge Gainsbourg (a heroic life),’ an upcoming biopic.
