Tom Petty Not Retiring

Tom Petty denies reports that he’s retiring.

Tom Petty Retiring Photo Looks like Tom Petty won’t back down after all. The veteran rocker says he’s not retiring, despite a Rolling Stone article in July that suggested otherwise. Petty said 2006 was one of the most rewarding years in his career, and he expects the ride to continue in 2007. “You never know how things are going to turn out, and I didn’t see this year coming,” Petty told the Los Angeles Times for a story published Sunday. “But maybe next year will be even better.”

Petty and his band, the Heartbreakers, recently earned two Grammy nominations for their latest album, “Highway Companion.” Their 30th anniversary tour was a sellout and included a triumphant homecoming to Gainesville, Fla., where the band formed in the 1970s. Petty was offered the key to the city.

The Heartbreakers also are the subject of a documentary due out in 2007 from Oscar-nominated director
Peter Bogdanovich. Bogdanovich calls Petty “an American troubadour in the truest sense of the word.”

Petty is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His many hits include “I Won’t Back Down, “Even the Losers,” “Breakdown,” “American Girl,” “Free Fallin’” and “The Waiting.”

As a former professor of mine liked to joke, Retire from what? Why wouldn’t Petty continue to perform and record albums as long as he’s still enjoying it? It’s not as if he’s under any obligation to do 300 shows a year or anything; he’s at the point where he can dictate his own pace.

50 Worst Artists in Music History

Blender Magazine has a rather dubious list of “The 50 Worst Artists in Music History.” Among the pretty good bands included on the list,

    47 GOO GOO DOLLS

    37 THE DOORS

    21 THE ALAN PARSONS PROJECT

    19 DAN FOGELBERG

    6 KANSAS

    5 STARSHIP

    2 EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER

Several of the other selections, like Kenny G (#4) are pretty silly, too, although not the kind of thing I enjoy.

Even the “worst” band of all time, INSANE CLOWN POSSE, is a strange selection. They deserve to move a few spots up the list, if nothing else, for the lyrics to “F— the World” alone. “F– Kyle and his brother Tom Petty” – classic.

Hat tip: Trikc, who liked some of the bands, too.
